With the Met’s 2018–19 season opening with Saint-Saëns’s sumptuous Samson et Dalila, what better way to start our Opera Boot Camp offerings than with an introduction to French opera? In this four-part course, resident Opera Boot Camp instructor Naomi Barrettara offers both newcomers and seasoned operagoers a fun and fascinating exploration of this season’s French operatic masterpieces.

Part 1: Gaetano Donizetti and the Italian-French Bel Canto Connection This first session focuses on the historical and musical connection between Italian and French opera in the first half of the 1800s, giving rise to works such as Donizetti’s comedic hit La Fille du Régiment.
